David had not said anything more about the bookshop. That was the part that kept her awake. He had taken his hand off her shoulder, finally, and gone to wash up, and over dinner he had been warm, attentive, easy, and had told her about a wrist, and had not mentioned Halloran's again — and the not-mentioning sat in the apartment like furniture they both stepped around. A correction she could have survived. It was the silence that frightened her, because a silence could be holding anything.
She woke at four-eleven and lay in the dark beside the small grey number that did not move, and at five thirty-three she heard his running shoes find the stair that gave, and at five thirty-four the door pulled shut with the soft careful pull he used when he believed her asleep.
She counted to forty. Her body knew how long it took a man's footfall to clear the steps and round onto Linden. At forty she was standing.
She wanted to hear a voice that had known her before she became a woman who counted to forty. She took her phone to the kitchen and did not turn on the light and tapped the third name in her favorites — Mom, David, Hannah — and held her thumb above her sister's name the way she used to hold a pencil above a sentence that was correct on the page and wrong in the throat. Nineteen days since she'd called. Two emoji and love you sis can't talk this week swamped in reply. She tapped it anyway.
It rang once, the half-ring of a phone already in a hand.
"Sarah."
The voice arrived shined.
"Hi. Is this — is it an okay time? It's early, I know, five forty in Burlington, I —"
"It is so okay, it is more than okay, oh my god, hi — I was up, you will not believe, we had a corgi come in last night, eight years old, his idiot lovely owner lets him into a field at dusk and he gets bitten on the cheek by what we're pretty sure was a garter, not even venomous, but the dog comes in swollen, like a brioche with eyes, and the owner is weeping —"
"Han —"
"— and Marcy's on, you'd love Marcy, she looks at the dog and says, in her Marcy voice, ma'am, your dog is having an allergic reaction to your anxiety, gives him a Benadryl, and that's the whole thing, dog goes home the size of a dog. That was my entire night. How are you, how's the new place, I want to hear everything."
Sarah set the phone on the counter and put it on speaker, because the volume of her sister's voice in her ear was a thing she had not braced for. The kettle ticked on the trivet.
"It's — good. I —"
"I love that for you. Good. God, good is so underrated. People throw away good and chase, like, transcendent. Mom and I were just saying it's good you're out. Out of the city. The city was eating you, you said that once, didn't you —"
"Hannah, can I ask you something."
A pause. Half a beat. The kind she'd have marked in a margin with a single pencil tick.
"Of course. Of course. Anything."
"Do you remember the farmhouse. In Charlotte. The little stand of trees behind the porch, where Mom — where we used to —"
"Oh my god, speaking of — Anya at work, she's got a cat now, her neighbor's daughter went to college, took the cat, discovered cat allergies, brought it home, the neighbor's also allergic —"
The kettle made its second sound. Sarah lifted it off the flame and let it tick down.
"— and Anya doesn't need a cat, but this cat has a face, Sarah, it sits in the dry sink like a little grey bathtub and just looks —"
She let her sister talk. She let her sister talk and she ran her tongue once across the inside of her lower lip, the smooth part, not the chip — the chip was for the rooms where David stood — and she tried, twice more, to set the birch trees down on the floor of the conversation, the trees behind the porch, the white bark, the ones we, and twice more her sister picked the floor back up before the memory could touch it. The vet board, the licensing thing she was sure Hannah had never mentioned and was now, after two breaths, no longer sure of anything about. She heard her own voice go up bright to match. Oh — no — tell me, what was the licensing thing — the voice of an older sister who had spent her whole life making her younger one feel that her stories deserved the floor, and who, given the choice between asking twice and giving up the floor, would give it up.
She gave it up. Hannah took it. Nineteen minutes and four seconds, the call log said, when it ended on I love you, I love you, you sound good, you sound good, bye-bye, bye — and Sarah held the phone against her sternum for thirty seconds because thirty seconds was what her body asked for, and could not have told anyone, afterward, what the licensing thing had been.
Hannah did not let me finish a sentence about the trees. The sentence arrived whole; she'd been composing it under her sister's voice the entire time. Twice. She is being kept from it too. Someone has been brighter at her than I knew.
She did not write it in the notes. She put on the cardigan with the bookmark in it, and she went out at nine fourteen, and she did not pretend to be going to the market.
She went straight across the thirty-two feet.
The bell sounded. The shop was warm and dim and smelled of paper and tea, and Jude looked up from the worktable at the back where he was running a bone folder down the spine of something half-bound, and he did not perform surprise or welcome. He just set the tool down.
"You came back," he said. There was something in the way he said it — not surprise, exactly, but a quiet undoing of a thing he had braced against, as though he had spent the days since deciding she would not, and had been wrong, and was glad to be wrong.
"You said it was always on."
"It is." He nodded at the back wall, where a kettle sat on a hot plate and two mugs waited. "Go on."
She poured for herself. Her hand was steady, which surprised her. She brought the mug back toward the counter and stood across it from him, and for a while neither of them filled the silence, and the silence again was the kind with a current in it.
"My sister called this morning," she heard herself say. She had not planned to say anything. "I tried to ask her about something. A memory. From when we were kids. She talked over it. Twice." She turned the mug a quarter-turn on the counter. "I used to think she just talked a lot."
Jude listened the way he did everything — completely, without hurry, without reaching for the thing he would say next while she was still speaking. It was the rarest thing, she thought, to be listened to by someone who was not, underneath the listening, assembling the version of events he would hand back to you as the correct one. David listened like a man taking a deposition. Jude listened like a man reading a letter that had been addressed to him. When she stopped, he let the stop be there a moment before he answered.
"You count," he said.
She looked up.
"When you came in just now," he said, "you stopped inside the door and you counted the steps to the counter before you took them. You did it the first time too. And when you set the mug down you turned it so the handle faced the way it was facing on the shelf." He said it without judgment, the way you'd read a measurement off an instrument. "Somebody's taught you to take up less room than you take. To leave everything the way you found it so there's no proof you were there." A beat. "You apologized to me the first day for standing where you were standing. You weren't in the way of anything."
The shop was very quiet.
No one had said it. In fourteen months no one had said it, not Emma with her bench, not her mother with her hand on Sarah's wrist, not Hannah, not herself — and a man she had spoken perhaps forty words to had read it off her the way she read a comma, all the way down, and laid it on the counter between them without softening it and without telling her what to do about it.
It should have been a relief. It was the opposite of a relief. It was the most exposed she had been in a year — more exposed than under David's stalled thumb, because David only watched her to keep her; this man had watched her to understand her, and understanding was the thing she could not survive being given right now, standing in a shop her husband had said the name of with his thumb gone still.
And there was the worse thing, the thing she could not afford to feel and felt anyway: that being understood by him was not only terror. It was warmth, low in her body, in a place that had been kept at sixty-eight degrees for fourteen months. He had not flattered her and he had not pitied her and he had not, once, told her what she felt. He had simply seen her clearly and stayed where he was, and some part of her that David had filed down to nothing rose toward that the way a plant turns in a window, helpless and entire, and the rising was its own kind of free-fall. She had come in here to hear a voice that knew her before. She had not known the danger was a voice that knew her now.
Her eyes stung. Her chest moved the way it had moved at the window, except faster, and worse, because this time the man was three feet away and had a name and had just told her the truth about her own life in a sentence she could not unread.
"I have to go," she said.
"Sarah —" He had her name. Emma must have — or he'd read it somewhere, on the press's old contributor pages, on anything; he was a man who read. He didn't move from behind the counter. He didn't reach. "You don't have to explain anything in here. That's the whole point of the back wall."
But she was already setting the mug down — turning the handle, she realized, helplessly, to face the way it had faced on the shelf, doing the exact thing he had just named, in front of him, unable to stop — and she went out fast, and the bell rang behind her, once, clear, and she crossed the thirty-two feet not counting them this time because she could not see them through the water in her eyes, and she did not look back to see whether he had come to the window to watch her go.
She did not need to look. She already knew that he had.
