The text came in at midnight, three words from a sender field that read only L.C. — three letters where his assistant's name had been on everything else that day.
Wear black tomorrow.
I read it twice. Then I lay on top of the comforter in last night's clothes and told myself three lies about why my pulse had picked up. That I'd wear black because the message said so and I was the kind of woman who followed an instruction a federal court might one day read. That black photographed competently. The third lie I didn't let myself look at directly, the way you don't look at the sun to confirm it's there.
I had three black dresses. One was for funerals. One was at the cleaner with a coffee stain on the sleeve. The third I'd worn to a Columbia alumni dinner two years ago, where a consultant spent ninety minutes explaining the law to a woman who'd graduated from the school he was lecturing her about, and I'd smiled the whole ninety minutes like I hadn't. I hadn't touched the dress since. I put it on at quarter to six. It fit the way a good contract fits — close in the places that mattered, generous where motion was required — and I stood in front of the mirror longer than the dress deserved, because somewhere under the lies was a fourth thing, soft and unforgivable, that wanted him to look.
The car arrived at six exactly. Black Lincoln, fleet plates, nothing personal ever left in the back seat. The driver opened the door without a word and closed it without a word and never once found my eyes in the mirror.
There was a man in the front passenger seat.
He didn't turn around. He didn't say good evening the way a partner raised to say it would. He let me sit behind him in silence while the car found the FDR, and the silence wasn't empty — it was full, a pressure, the held quiet of a room where one person is choosing every word before they spend it.
"Thank you for being on time," Lachlan said at last, to the windshield.
"You said six."
"Yes. Most people read that as seven minutes after six."
"Most people have somewhere to be at seven minutes after six."
I watched the back of his head. He didn't answer, and he didn't have to, because I'd just handed him, without meaning to, the precise shape of my life — that a six o'clock dinner could be a fixed and lonely event for me. I felt the giving-away happen and couldn't take it back. I made my hands lie still in my lap.
The river slid past the color of old slate. The skyline did the thing it does from inside a moving car at night, rendering itself as bars of light too fast to read. I was aware of him the whole time the way you're aware of a lit stove behind you in a dark kitchen, the heat reaching you before you turn — the side of his jaw, the line of his shoulder, the economy of a man who didn't waste motion. I have spent my life being careful which men I let myself feel in a dark car. I was failing at it, quietly, and I knew I was failing, and that frightened me more than the silence did.
"Have you eaten today," he said, twelve minutes later.
"I had coffee."
"That isn't what I asked."
"No," I said. "I haven't."
He didn't reply. He'd asked the question to learn whether I would lie to him over something small. I'd chosen not to, and I wasn't sure, watching the back of his head, whether I'd done it because it was strategy or because some traitor part of me had already decided not to lie to this man at all.

The restaurant was in Tribeca. The maître d' had the door open before we'd crossed the sidewalk.
"Mr. Cross. The usual table."
He answered the name a half-beat slow. Not the warm reflex of a man who has been Mr. Cross since birth — the practiced one of a man who had learned to wear the name and put it on each morning. I felt the seam of it without being able to name what I'd felt.
Then Lachlan took my elbow.
It was the first time he had touched me, and the touch undid the careful thing I'd been holding all night. Not at the elbow the way a man taking a liberty holds an elbow — at the joint, pressure and lift, redirecting, the way you move someone you have decided to keep. I felt the angle of the world change before my body chose to follow it, felt the heat of his hand come through the thin black sleeve like a brand, and for one shameful breath I let myself be moved, let my weight tip into the certainty of his grip, before my mind caught up to the fact that we were no longer walking toward the door.
"Change of plans," he said to the maître d', pleasant, unhurried. "Italian. Two blocks south. My apologies to the kitchen."
The maître d' didn't look surprised. He looked relieved.
We were back on the sidewalk before I'd finished assembling the question. His hand was still at my elbow. I was aware of every point of contact and furious at myself for the inventory.
"Mr. Cross."
"Lachlan."
"Mr. Cross." I let his hand stay where it was, which was its own small surrender, and I hated that too. "Was there someone in that restaurant we weren't going to be eating with?"
He didn't look at me. He looked once, briefly, back at the windows of the place we'd left — checking, I understood only later, whether anyone had risen and come to the glass. The glass stayed empty.
"Yes," he said.
"Will you tell me who."
"No."
I should have pulled my arm free then. That was the line, the place where a careful woman steps back and lets the cold air in between herself and a man who reroutes her through the dark and won't say from what. Instead I felt the opposite pull, low and unwelcome, the pull of being walked somewhere safe by a hand that knew exactly where the danger stood. My body had picked a side. My judgment hadn't been consulted.
"All right," I said, in the voice I used with opposing counsel when I'd decided a point wasn't worth litigating yet.
He heard the register of it. I felt him hear it, felt the faint change in the pressure of his fingers, the way you feel a man register that the woman beside him is not, in fact, easy.
"We'll eat," he said. "The conversation we were going to have isn't the one we'll have now. The new one is shorter. You'll eat. I'll tell you three things. Then this car takes you home, and it doesn't stop, and the driver never looks at you. Is that acceptable."
"Yes."
"Good." And only then, at the corner, did he let go of my elbow, and the cold rushed into the place his hand had been, and I missed the warmth before I'd finished being ashamed of missing it.

The Italian place two blocks south had checked tablecloths and waiters who called me miss like it was a courtesy and not a rank. He ordered for both of us, low and quick — carbonara for me, grilled fish for himself — and then I watched him not eat.
He cut the fish into pieces of even size and moved them an inch at a time across the plate and never once lifted the fork to his mouth. He was performing a dinner, the way you stage one so an audience reads they are eating without any food being spent. I ate the carbonara, because hunger was useful, and because somewhere under the table my knee was six inches from his and I needed something to do with the wanting.
"Three things," he said, when he was satisfied I wouldn't faint in the car. "One. The dinner you were going to have tonight would have been with a man who wants to meet you. He isn't a client. He'll never be in any document this firm produces. You'll meet him in time. He should not have been the first man you met outside the office in connection with this place."
"All right."
"Two. From Monday you work directly for me on Northwell. No one else supervises you. Your hours come to me first. That's for your protection, not your isolation — tell me the day it starts to feel like the second one." He set the unused fork down. "Three. The floor you'll walk onto Monday holds a man whose attention you earned this week by being better than the room. Earned attention is a different kind of debt than the kind you never earned. Be careful which one you're paying down, and with what. That's all I'll say tonight. I won't say it again."
He signed the check without looking at the total.
In the car he didn't say good night. He got out with me at my curb in Astoria and didn't walk me to the door — he stood on the sidewalk between the car and the entryway, hands in his pockets, watching the street in both directions until my key turned in the lock. Then he got back in the front seat and the Lincoln pulled away, and I stood inside my own dark hallway with my heart going like a thing I'd lent out without asking the terms.
I didn't sleep. I lay on top of the comforter again and ran the evening forward and backward, the elbow, the empty window, the three things that had not been three things but a contract, and the warmth that had rushed out of my arm when he let go.
And then, somewhere near two, the cold arithmetic arrived under all the heat and shut it off like a hand over a flame.
The dinner would have been with a man who wants to meet you. He had rerouted me. He had checked a window. A driver who knew my home address I had never given. A man waiting, in a restaurant in Tribeca, at a table set for two — and Lachlan Cross had walked me out of it before I ever sat down.
It hadn't been a trap for him. He was already safe; he was the one steering. The table had been set for a woman in a black dress, told what to wear, delivered to the door.
I sat up in the dark and looked at the three words still glowing in the thread. Wear black tomorrow. I had read them as a man's small possessiveness, a thing to be privately, shamefully pleased by. They had never been that. They were a costume. Someone had dressed me for an appointment I hadn't known I'd been booked into, and the only reason I'd walked back out of it on my own two feet was that another man had taken my elbow and turned me into the street before I reached the chair.
Which meant the warmth I'd been replaying all night — the hand, the redirect, the lost heat at the corner — had a price I hadn't finished reading. He'd protected me. He'd also known precisely what I needed protecting from, in advance, down to the table number, and had told me none of it.
Someone had been waiting in that restaurant for me.
